Debrief | Over-Functioning & Intermittent Reinforcement in Caroline’s Story | Domestic Violence
In this debrief episode of Narcissist Apocalypse, Brandon breaks down how love bombing, over-functioning, and intermittent reinforcement kept Caroline trying to recover the extraordinary first six weeks of her relationship. After destabilizing Caroline through insults, withdrawal, lies, and gaslighting, the abuser made every rupture her problem to solve. Caroline responded by monitoring her tone, suppressing her reactions, giving more emotionally and financially, and searching for the right way to restore the man she believed was his authentic self. Brandon explains how brief returns of warmth and generosity made Caroline’s over-functioning appear successful. Each reward revived her hope while the abuser lowered the standard of treatment and tested how much more she would tolerate.
